這句諺語直譯是「不好的消息旅行得很快」，亦即「惡事傳千里」。這句話可說是再真確不過了，因為人是八卦的動物，尤其遇到別人的衰事，怎能不好好傳播、議論一番呢？這句話也因此有另一個版本：Good news travels fast; bad news travels faster.（好事傳得快，壞事傳得更快）。
