這句諺語直譯是「不要在公共場所洗你的髒亞麻布」，句中的 dirty linen可寫成 dirty laundry，兩者都是「髒衣服」，亦即「家中的秘密或不可告人的事」，意思是勸人不要把家裡的醜事隨便告訴外人。的確，there is a skeleton in every closet（家家有本難念的經），誰家沒有醜事？但如果天天把家裡的大小醜事到處宣揚，那就真的很糗了！
