這句諺語直譯是「忠告在最需要的時候 (most needed) 通常最不被留意 (least heeded)」。的確，一般人對別人的忠告總是 in one ear and out the other（右耳進、左耳出），而且越是重要的忠告越是聽不進去，因此這句諺語便是在提醒那些自以為很厲害、不聽勸告的人。
