這句諺語直譯是「人不在讓心變得更疼愛」，意思就是「人與人之間若分開一段時間，則感情會更好」。這句話通常用在男女關係上，即所謂separation intensifies love（分隔會加深愛的強度），不過這句話也可用在一般的關係上，例如老闆與員工、朋友之間等；也有人會將這句話擴及到人以外的「事物」，指的也是類似的意思。英文中有一句諺語在某種程度上與本句相反：Familiarity breeds contempt.（近廟欺神）。
