這句話直譯是「自己活，也讓別人活」，意思就是「你照你想要的方式過活，也讓別人照他想要的方式過活」。這句諺語通常用在勸人不要太過挑剔、批評別人，也不要處處控制、處罰別人。台灣這幾年因為政黨惡鬥，很多政治人物紛紛拋開以往溫柔敦厚的形象，轉而成為尖酸刻薄、得理不饒人的政客，尤其每到選舉期間，競爭白熱化，政客更是不顧形象、胡言亂語，看得老百姓只能搖頭嘆息。台灣人從小被教育要be strict with oneself and lenient towards others（嚴以律己、寬以待人），偏偏台灣政客們「嚴以待人，寬以律己」。別忘了live and let live，多一點包容、多一點善意，這才是台灣人的本性啊！
