大家都知道，表面看起來波動得很厲害的河流通常很淺，而表面平靜的水流通常才會深不見底，這句話直譯是「平靜的水流得很深」，意思是「深沈的海域儘管底下流動得很激烈，可是表面上卻什麼也看不出來」，用來闡述「人不可貌相，海水不可斗量」、「靜水常深」的道理，亦即雖然某個人看起來很安靜，甚至不出色，可是他可能很有料，完全不像外表所顯現的樣子。
A: I can’t believe that the boss would choose Mr. Malone as his assistant… He looks rather shy.
B: But I heard that he was a driving force at his last company, doubling sales figures in just two years.
A: But look at him. He comes across as slow-witted and quiet. He looks like anybody could pick on him.
