新聞是多數人獲得資訊的管道。不管是傳統的紙本或是現今的數位資訊，決定你想閱讀某則新聞的關鍵通常就是「新聞標題」。英文也不例外，因此英文新聞標題通常用字少，而且有時也會故意寫得模糊，以吸引讀者繼續閱讀。不過英文新聞標題有些固定的寫法，不熟悉的讀者可能會因無法理解而造成障礙，今天就讓我們來學學英文新聞標題的特色，讓你一次看懂它！
特色一：使用現在式
(present tense)雖然多數新聞在被讀者看到時都已是過去或完成的事件，但標題還是會用現在式書寫。例如：
Ø Government employees
protest pay cuts.
政府雇員抗議減薪。
（原本句子為：Government employees
protested pay cuts.）
Ø Samsung CEO steps down.
三星執行長下台。
（原本句子為：Samsung CEO has stepped
down.）
特色二：省略助動詞(auxiliary
verbs)
寫作中原本應該使用進行式、完成式、或被動語態的句子，在新聞標題時會省略其中的助動詞，如 have, has, had, am, is,
are, were, was, been, be等，而直接寫出分詞。例如：
Ø Six killed in disastrous
quake.
六人在災難性地震中喪生。
（原本句子為：Six people have been
killed in the disastrous earthquake.）
Ø Healthcare bill passed
by Congress.
國會通過了醫療保健法案。
（原本句子為：The healthcare bill was

Ø Residents angry at new
recycling regulation.

特色三：以不定詞
(to+V) 代替未來式
(future tense)
新聞標題中若要表示即將或尚未發生的事件時，並不會用will或 be going to 等代表未來的時態，而是用不定詞 to 後面加原形動詞代替。例如：
Ø US President to visit
Japan.
美國總統將出訪日本。
（原本句子為：The United States
President is going to visit Japan.）
Ø British POWs to revisit battle
field.
英國戰俘將重訪戰場。
（原本句子為：Some British prisoners
of war will revisit a battle field.）
特色四：以標點符號
(punctuation) 代替連接詞
(conjunction)
新聞標題中時常使用逗號 (comma)、冒號 (colons)、分號 (semi-colons)、或是破折號 (dash)等來取代連接詞 and 等。例如：
Ø UN escort 300 Syrian women,
children to Germany.
聯合國護送300名敘利亞婦女和兒童到德國。
（原本句子為：The United Nations
escorted 300 Syrian women and children to Germany.）
Ø Fire in chemical
factory: dozens dead.
化工廠失火，死了數十人。

特色五：省略冠詞
(articles)
新聞標題為求簡約，時常省略比較不重要的詞性，例如冠詞 a, an, the 等：
Ø Murder suspect held by
Navy.
殺人嫌犯被海軍扣留。
（原本句子為：A murder suspect was
held by the Navy.）
Ø Mayor cooks for charity.
市長為慈善活動下廚。
