Only in the US... (II) 只有在美國… （下）

上次我們談到了美國社會一些有趣的矛盾，今天再舉三個例子：

Only in the US… do people leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and leave useless things and junk in boxes in the garage.

只有在美國… 人們將價值不斐的汽車停在車道，而將不值錢的垃圾東西放在車庫裡。

Only in the US… do people use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so they won’t miss a call from someone they didn’t want to talk to in the first place.

只有在美國… 人們會用電話答錄機來過濾電話，然後用「電話插播」來確定他們不會沒接到本來就不想接的電話。

Only in the US… do people buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

只有在美國… 熱狗香腸是以十個為單位來賣，而包裹熱狗的麵包是以八個為單位來賣。

在美國，大部分家庭都會把車庫拿來當土木工作室或儲藏室，這是美國男性們最喜歡消磨週末的好所在。不過車庫既然堆滿了亂七八糟的工具，車子當然只好犧牲停在車庫外，任憑風吹雨打，因此才會形成第一則笑話裡的奇景。

另外，美國家庭都有裝 answering machine（電話答錄機），而且是有 caller ID（來電顯示）的那種，用來過濾電話。不過這樣還不夠，美國人又愛加裝 call waiting（電話插播）的服務，到頭來還是常常接到不想聽的電話！

第三則笑話中的問題在美國十分常見，不過解決方式其實很簡單，就是找出10 與8的最小公倍數 (=40) ，一次各買 40 個。你以為這樣很誇張嗎？其實以美國人的「肚量」而言，這種份量剛剛好呢！
