天有不測風雲

俗諺云：「天有不測風雲，人有旦夕禍福」，人生在世總有遭逢意外的時候，這時我們該如何用英文來描述呢？英文裡有許多有關「傷害」的字：harm、wound、injure、hurt、damage，可是各有各的「傷害領域」，不能混合使用，今天就讓我們在逢凶化吉之餘，好好分辨一下：

harm 這個字的名詞與動詞同一個字，意思都是「傷害」，這是英文中「傷害」最普遍的講法。動詞的用法如：The man harmed the hostage.（這人傷害了人質）、The smell won’t harm you. （這氣味不會傷害你）。名詞的用法如：There’s no harm in your staying up late.（你晚睡並無害）、He means no harm.（他沒有惡意；他不會傷害任何人）。

wound 可以當名詞用，也可當動詞用。wound 是被攻擊所造成的「受傷；創傷」特別是指被利器割傷或子彈造成的射傷，而且這種受傷是對方故意的行為（例如在戰場上）。He died because of the bullet wounds in the head.（他因頭部的槍彈傷而死）、The wound was healing gradually.（這傷口逐漸復原了）、53 soldiers were wounded in the battle.（53名士兵在戰役中受傷了）、The guard was wounded in the arm.（侍衛的手臂受傷了）。

wound 也可以指一個人在情感及名譽上所受的傷害，例如 The breakup left a deep wound to his pride.（分手對他的自尊心造成很深的傷害）、She was wounded by her husband’s cheating.（她丈夫的不忠令她很受傷）。

injure通常指人在意外事故中所受到的傷害，例如車禍、運動、或工作時由機器所造成的傷害。例如：3 people were seriously injured in the car crash.（這場車禍有三個人受重傷）、He injured himself by falling.（他跌倒受傷）。

injure 的名詞是 injury，指的是對肉體所造成的傷害，例如：This exercise will result in injury to your legs.（這種運動會損害你的腳）、She suffered severe injuries from the car accident.（她在車禍中受重傷）。

比起 injure，hurt 通常指的是較不嚴重的傷害，例如：She hurt her back lifting the table.（她搬桌子時傷了背部）。如果要強調嚴重的傷害，則可在 hurt 之前加形容詞，如：His friend was badly hurt in the car accident.（他朋友在車禍中受重傷）

hurt 也可指情感上的傷害或痛苦，例如你可以說：It hurts me to see him cry.（看到他哭讓我很難受）、She was deeply hurt when he left.（他離開時，她受創甚深）。

damage 雖然也是「傷害」，但與上面幾個字不同的是，damage 所造成的傷害不在人，而在事、物。例如你可以說：The scandal has damaged his career.（這醜聞已損害了他的事業）、The storm damaged the fence.（這暴風雨損毀了柵欄）、The president’s behavior has damaged relations between the two countries.（總統的作為已傷害了兩國的關係）。

另外，damage 強調對「原本具有價值的事物」造成的傷害或破壞，而且這些事物在未來是有可能被修復的。所以上面例句中的「事業」、「柵欄」、「兩國關係」若經一番修補，假以時日是可能回復的。damage 也可當名詞用，意思是「損毀；損壞」，例如：The accident did lots of damage to the car.（這事故對車子造成很大的損害）、Her cheating has caused damage to her reputation.（作弊已損害了她的名聲）。
