興趣．習慣．癖好

有句話說，Man is a creature of habits.（人是習慣的動物），真是一點也不錯！而且有些習慣久了成嗜好、嗜好久了成自然，自然久了成習俗…，真是複雜得很。英文裡有關這類的字也不少，偏偏很多人常把它們搞在一起，例如很多人常說：My hobbies are listening to music and reading. 事實上，「聽音樂」或「看書」只能稱為一個人的 interest 或 pastime，而不是 hobby 呢！今天就讓我們好好來分辨一下這些字：

habit 是「習慣；癖好；習性」，指的是一個人重複的行為，尤其指不用大腦想、不知不覺就會重複進行某項行為的習性，而且這種習性通常很難停止。例如：He has the habit of smoking during meals.（他有邊吃飯邊抽煙的習慣）、Don’t make borrowing money a habit.（別讓借錢成為習慣），或者：I’ve got into the habit of turning on all the lights as soon as I get home.（我已養成了一回家就馬上打開全部電燈的習慣）。

custom 則是「習俗」，最常表示一個社會、文化、國家長久以來累積、被一般大眾所接受的風俗習慣。例如「中國人的習俗」是 the customs of the Chinese。你也可以說：It’s difficult to get used to another country’s customs.（要適應另一個國家的風俗習慣並非易事）。另外，custom 的形容詞是 customary（合乎習俗的；習慣上的），因此你可以說：It’s customary to tip waiters in the US.（在美國，依慣例要付小費給服務員）。要注意的是，custom 雖多指「國家社會的習俗」，有時候也與 habit 類似，可以指「個人的習慣」，例如：It’s her custom to get up early.（早起是她的習慣）或：It’s my custom to go for a walk after dinner.（飯後散步是我的習慣）。

另一個跟「社會文化」有關的字是 practice（常規；慣例）指的是出於議事、規則進行的習慣，或社會上視為理所當然的常規。例如「握手的習慣」是 the practice of shaking hands。另外你可以說：It’s common practice to pay a deposit with your order.（在預訂時付押金是一般的慣例）、It is the practice in Britain to drive on the left.（車輛靠左行駛是英國的慣例），或者：It’s standard practice to ask hotel guests for their passports when they check in.（客人入住飯店時，要求客人出示護照是一種標準的慣例）。

hobby 指的則是個人的「嗜好；業餘愛好」，尤其強調一個人在工作之餘，會耗費許多時間積極從事的活動。例如你可以說：My hobby is stamp-collecting.（我愛好集郵）、Her hobbies include belly-dancing and aerobics.（她的興趣包括跳肚皮舞及有氧舞蹈）。要特別注意的是，一般人常做的「看書」、「看電視」、「聽音樂」等並不能稱為 hobbies，因為我們在從事這些活動時通常是為了打發時間，而不是將之當成「終身志業」在進行，所以稱不上是 hobby！

pastime 指的則是「消遣；在閒暇時間進行的活動」，如閱讀、聽音樂等。這個字是從 pass time 而來，意思是「快樂度過閒暇時光」，因此你可以說：Watching TV is one of my pastimes.（看電視是我的消遣之一）、Photography is her favorite pastime.（攝影是她最愛的消遣）。

最後，interest 指的是「興趣；娛樂」，指的是會引起一個人興趣的事物。例如「有多方面興趣的人」是 a man with wide interests。另外你也可以說：Her leisure time interests include reading and listing to music. （她閒暇時的興趣包括看書及聽音樂）、His main interests are basketball outside his work.（他工作之餘的消遣是打籃球）、以及 Her greatest interest in life is clothes.（她生活中最大的樂趣是衣著）。
